John works with a large number of farming clients, and is involved with the management of several farming trusts. He also works with a number of national service and retail businesses. John is a trustee of the Massey University Venture Trust which supports visiting experts in Agricultural Economics. As secretary to the Guthrie Smith Trust Board, he has a keen interest in the arboretum development at Tutira. John has a holiday home in Taupo, which he escapes to when he can to go boating and fishing.

Born in Invercargill, John has lived in Hawke's Bay since 1976. He studied accounting at Wellington Polytechnic and Victoria University.
